Make a Stranger Smile

Love whoever is around to be loved.
-Kurt Vonnegut

People have problems all the time. There are random strangers I see on the street when I walk my way to school everyday. I smile at them and most of them smile back. It’s strange how one simple act of kindness could make somebody’s day great.

How do you make a stranger smile? Simple. We should let our guards down. Remember, we are strangers to strangers too so we must give ourselves a chance to connect and pour our hearts out- even for a minute or two.

Thank the cashier at the convenient store. Hold a door for someone. Give someone an anonymous Tumblr love note. Inspire others online. Help an elderly with their luggage. Nod at acquaintances. Share your snack with somebody. Recommend a book to a student. Say “please” and “thank you”. Tell a clean joke. Give compliments. Share your umbrella on a rainy day. Help people with directions. Volunteer at a cause. Bake goodies for somebody. Leave encouraging post-it notes in a library books and other random places. Treat people the way they should be.

See, everyone is important. We need to appreciate them and let them know they’re not alone. There are countless ways on how to make a stranger smile but most importantly, smile too. We cannot share happiness to anybody without being happy first.

So forget those lonely nights. This time, you deserve to be happy.
